Meeting people..it is a blessing for sure..

Meet ,Mary Ann and Dave ....

Well , I have been busy getting ready for Canada Day and Privateer Days this coming weekend. Today Monday June 28th the Heaven's opened with down pours of rain. We cleaned the house ,taking advantage of the cooler weather . Some friend's dropped in with company from away , nice of them to bring them here to visit and take a look at my art and share some laughs. Being such a dreary day , I didn't expect to see many people . Chuck had a lot of running around to do for me and he was outside doing something when I heard him say" stay there ,can my wife take a picture"? well, I heard him not knowing what he was talking about ,but I grabbed the camera anyway and ran to the front to see and meet a wonderful couple in their early 60's who are travelling on bicycles from Ontario( google )--- "Mary Ann and Dave's Bike Trip out East ...and back "and follow along with them.

I have said this many times before ,how we believe people are sent to us and we to them, I love it when that happens, it makes my day and my Summer to meet such nice Folk's, our Teacher and Nurse last week, my Helicopter Guy's a couple weeks before, and so on and so on and now Mary Ann and Dave. People like this inspire me , they give a good feeling and make our day when we get to say Hi and in most cases share a energy hug , full of Blessings and a Thank yous for the Memories of a very nice World and People in it ...besides the not so joyful news. Makes it all worthwhile. We offered them our out back "Bunkhouse" their tent and every part of them were wet. Unfortunately we don't have an extra bedroom..otherwise we would have dried them out here, but they need to get all their gear inside and dried out for another day on the road tomorrow , so we directed them to Lanes ... Safe trip Kid's , God's speed....
It is now Tuesday morning and I will assume that Mary Ann and Dave had a dry night under cover . The weather ahead looks good for them for the next so many days.

I have been so busy...

It has been awhile, so much has been going on some very good and one such thing very bad, the worst. A young man who we watched grow into a handsome tall blond 22 year old who had a jest for life and lived it to the fullest ,was killed in a car crash last weekend. I have been pondering whether to write anything about this for days and have set here so many times in this past week and writing some profound things to then delete after. There really are only a few words which need to be said, these words would be" Life is way too short". God Bless his Parents and keep them strong.

Because my heart has been full of tears this long slow moving week I have been finishing up a few smaller paintings for the Tourist season, folk's like these little paintings which they can stick right in their suitcases while travelling.

As well , I finished a painting which may already be sold ,as well, above a shot of it's first sketch.

When not painting out of the sun inside, I was out in the heat and sun planting and tending to my flower gardens. I am baked and getting dark. I try and keep myself covered with clothing sun screen and hats and still I am turning that not so wanted at this older age dark with tan. When I was a teenager I would lie in the sun all day and would never dream of using sun screen. I was not the brightest apple on the tree back then but I was the darkest. No matter how hard I try the sun finds me.

Privateer days as well as Canada day are coming quickly upon us and we are busy with thought as to what we are doing. We will be dressed as Pirates , someone needs to do that job, we want to fly our Pirate flags from our bikes and rape and pillage as much as we can..oh , who am I fooling, all we can do is dress as Pirates and go"Grrrrrrrr me matie" that would be about it at our ages, but we will have a few laughs for sure. The plan is to have a few items for sale down with the festivities, I will only take light things for sale on our bikes, keep it simple, sell from a blanket on the ground as a Pirate should, rather then take displays and all the fuss and muss we did in years past at shows, we will make a day of selling more fun these days then work. My gallery here in our home saves on all the wear and tear on our tired old bodies .

Chuck will be finishing up his wooden spoon spatulas to have for sale that day, they are great tools at an affordable price and I will take anything I can on my bike. I want to gear something up to haul behind my bike and I would love to decorate my bike as a Pirate ship for in the parade ,but??do I have that much energy to do this?...I wish, we will see. I will share here if I do.

Canada Day Chuck and I are going to do sidewalk chalk art with the kid's, that should be great fun. I have an idea for the kid's to do, again I will share with you after the event, some photos.

Yesterday, late in the day we had two fun loving young woman drop by, a Teacher and a Nurse, great friend's who went on a vacation adventure together and we were blessed that they dropped in. What fun we had taking their pictures with "Fred the Fisherman" (dummy) I have sitting against the side of the house. some people have so much fun with him.

People enjoy ,little things like that while travelling, what I call flavor and taste of a community, Dummies like "Fred the Fisherman" add color and they will have fond memories after stopping and having a photo session with him. They as well had their pictures taken with us, how nice and Thank you ladies for dropping in and sharing some laughs with us, you made our day. Drop by for a visit , next time you are in our area. Keep up the good work girl's with students and people who's lives you make a difference in.
Above you can meet "The Girl's" with Fred...as you can see they had a lot of fun with him and he has not been the same since...waiting for their return.

fun day with painting and people

Monday was a day I sat aside for working on my "Harvest" painting, I have a few more strokes yet to be added but thought this AM was a good day to share how he is coming along.
Liverpool ,being on the slower side when it comes to early Tourists arriving, Lunenburg on the other hand has already been a buzz with many people. I have been faithfully open days hoping someone would drop by and share a smile and yes doing business is good, but we all know that there is much more to life then money, now don't get me wrong I need it to get by and never make a fuss when given some. People have come by and these warmer days will bring more. I honestly feel I heal from the Winter 's cold blues , it seems to melt all away as our Summer Season begins and Folk's drop by .
Yesterday was one of those days, I was hard at painting when I had three Helicopter guy's drop by, why when three cute guy's come to my door that gives me a license for a few laughs, now ,I always take the gamble that someone will drop by without a sense of humor but ,come on ,these days with the World out there that some of us read about while other's are slammed right into it, we need to stand back and realize just what is important, and that would be to laugh and joke as often as we can and by all means ,tease the guy's as much as I can. These three gentlemen as soon as they walked in , I knew they were OK with a chuckle or two. The boy's were from Florida and have been in our part of the Country for a few Months working on and with a Helicopter, I didn't ask any details but it sounds to be a very interesting job and I can just imagine how they have spent these past few Months in Nova Scotia.Right Boy's ?
Happy that they took a day to visit our South Shore Liverpool area and drop in on me.
Getting good feedback is so rewarding and that is what I was given by these lovely Gents.
The funny part was that I was still in a chuckle from my weekend with my "Elevator " Boy's and then within two days I had my "Helicopter" Boy's ..what more could a girl ask for. Gee, my husband has a sense of humor himself to put up with my silliness, I guess after all these years ,he knows what he got into, and no worries about anyone taking me too serious.
I have been told so many times that Folk's really feel the Maritimes in my paintings not only because of the scenes I paint but the fact that the wood I paint on gives a feeling of our Nova Scotia sea Shores.
Actually yesterday brought me another young man, he and his young Bride just had a house warming party and were given a print of one of my canvasses , our son was Master of ceremonies at this young couples wedding . He dropped by interested in getting a painting from me for the main focal point in their new living room. Very special indeed to be hung in their home after watching them grow and marry ,knowing them and their parents for all our years on the Medway River..
We were invited for lunch on Thursday by the lovely people who bought our farm. Our Real estate Agent back over three years ago now when we sold found it strange that the day of the House closing we all met at the old homestead to break bread and toast with the folk's who bought the farm. She said this never happens, leave it to us :-)We have been back a few times and have jammed with friends of theirs who play Banjo and Cello. What a lovely feeling to go back and as beautiful as it is and you would not believe the view they have and of course we do miss our lazy days floating on the Medway River, skinny dipping whenever the mood or weather permits, yes those were super duper years but the fact we can go back and feel very pleased with the people who we believe were sent to us, who were meant to take over this special property from us. We love our little gem here in Liverpool don't get me wrong, this house was built by shipbuilders and has a wonderful feel and history as well.

rode the Elevator up and down

Well Saturday May 29th 2010, I rode the Elevator and watched my Mural as I went up and down. It was amazing. The first photo to the left is how it looks when you get in on the second floor. Next shot is of the Elevator Boy's who I made a point of having some fun with, they all had a wonderful sense of humor and we enjoyed working with them. First off they put me down in the pit and I started to incorporate the emergency ladder into the mural. I'm not really good on ladders but did rather well . The boy's were there to make me safe so that the Elevator wouldn't drop on my head, so I had all these men focusing on me in the pit, it took two of them to get me down there and back out when done. But, the exciting and scary part was riding on top of the Elevator, yes on top, myself and one of the guy's had to climb in on top and ride slowly to the top to cover a few screw holes and such things like that, I must admit as soon as it started up I found myself crouching down, a weird sensation for sure but these guy's are pros , big time. So I finished up all that needed to be done . The only thing I have not seen up yet because there was no one there to hang them are the two paintings I did for going up the steps, so I will return again another day soon and ride again to look out the portholes at the paintings outside the elevator.

I love the picture below right from down in the pit looking up towards the top of the elevator shaft. As you can see in this picture the mural is lite with spot lights as you ride up.

The last shot is of me in the pit.
So that is that and she is ready and waiting, they are opening either today or tomorrow. So head to Lunenburg ,get a room in this wonderful beautifully decorated Inn and take a ride for yourself. My baby is home.

a letter of Reconation from our local MLA

OK...this morning I may have to crazy glue my bottom to this chair . Pass the glue over boy's.

Yesterday when I picked my mail up...WOW!!! I had a very official envelope arrive , oh Dear what is this ? I opened it right there in the Post Office and and to my surprise and delight holy Hanna it was a letter from our Local MLA who sent me a letter of recognition from the House of Assembly of Nova Scotia. Of course I sent this news to all who may be happy for me at receiving such an honor and this morning I woke to an email from Heather Kelly who writes a Blog all about Queen's County , the people in it and what there is to see. Thank you Heather, such a wonderful kind article, I am on cloud nine and for me to float freely in the air, well it takes a lot ,I am a healthy girl :-)

There isn't much I can say that just looking at this letter doesn't say for itself.

Thank you everyone who has supported me all these years with my art and life ,costumers family and friend's I can't thank you all enough, I am thrilled to be awarded such a an honor and am humbled. Thank you Vicki Conrad MLA for Queen's.

Today and this weekend here in Liverpool The International Theatre Festival is going on and we have many people from near and far in town. Welcome all and the sun is shining. We are headed out on our bikes in a bit and then I will open my Gallery for the day.

Have a great weekend all.

Once upon a time in a small town dept. store

The other day I went into our local hardware store here in our quaint Little town of liverpool Nova Scotia where like all other little towns throughout the World ,everyone knows everyone. It is hard to be in a grumpy, leave me alone mood when you run into and are helped in these stores by such wonderful people who you grew up with ,whether old buddies or you just know them from shopping but always a smile and most times a joke or two is shared with these people. Well this day I was looking for something and while talking with the clerk he said to me"do you remember when you worked here when it was "People's Dept. store " back in the late 60's ? Well I had to laugh because I was just thinking about that when I was limping down those two flights of steps that day, I actually was remembering back when I ran up and down those steps many times a day back then ,I worked in the toy Dept. what fun we all had working in that store. My Mom worked there as well and I worked right beside her, she was on cash and my toy Dept. was right next to her and I bagged for her when she was busy, so many times people would remark how well we worked together and how much fun we had , when they found out we were Mother and Daughter ,they were impressed. I am happy to say I got to know my Mom during our time working together and I believe she enjoyed working with me, I know I gave this poor wonderful woman many headaches in the past. Yes little old now me :-)

So this clerk and I got to remembering and telling a few fun stories from back then and we shared a couple of these with one of his young coworkers and she was amazed at some of the things that went on there back then .

This store had many Depts and there was a person assigned to each Dept. They had a Pet Dept. and I can remember once they had a Skunk for sale another time they had a Squirrel Monkey, now I will admit right now before I get into my story , I do not approve today of these animals being sold and put into captivity . But lets get back to a fun story, one morning my mom was on checkout upstairs in the very front of the store which is now Home Hardware ,they had little square cubicles and counter which the cashier would go in and close and latch a little hip height door behind them. There she was all cozy and ready to open her register when this Squirrel Monkey came out from under her register where the bags were kept, well lets just say you could hear her squeal from all over the store and she jumped over the closed door. From the look of the stock room the Monkey had been out all night.

Another day, one of the girl's was trying to catch a budgie bird for someone, remember these Budgies? they came in green, yellow or blue, At times folk's would say I want that blue one over there, well they are pretty well all alike and we would catch what we thought was the one they wanted when then they would say,"no,not that one, that one" to have us there for God knows how long trying to net the right blue bird, well this one day a couple Budgies got out during this procedure and the girl who had the fabric Dept which was on the other side of the back of the store ,come to find out very quickly ,she was petrified of bird's and guess where these bird's took off too, yup,the fabric Dept. Well she grabbed whole bolts of material held them over her head while screaming and running away, well you should have seen all the commotion, it was just way too funny, I can't remember how we caught them in the end.

Another time , the manager who really liked Mom and enjoyed teasing and joking with her.Mom came into work one morning and again went to open her register and when she did a bunch of rubber snakes popped out when she opened the cash drawer. We were always doing silly fun things like that ,it was a different time and more people worked there ,now just a few look after the whole store .Oh, I made 96 cents an hour back then, yup, but I did get a raise :-)

A dear friend of mine worked there and she had the bra Dept. upstairs, one Friday night while we all were going around tidying up our Depts. killing time waiting to leave and go home for the night, she had an odd looking man in her Dept. she was keeping an eye on him from afar, every once in awhile he would kind of jump . When he left she went over to where he was and there she found a bra on the floor with a footprint on it, well we had fun with her that night, she had to walk home alone and she was a big breasted lady , we teased her saying for her to be careful of the bra stomper on her way home, today we would walk with her. A different time indeed.

Remember "Crazy Glue"? One Friday night, a couple young boys were looking a bit guilty and Mom told me to go keep an eye on them. The boys left and a while later we got a call from the Manger , come to find out the Boys stole the crazy glue and went to the movie at the Aster Theatre , one of them stuck his hand to the back of the seat in front of him and the Movie Manager had to pri him loose and finally the boy's admitted that they stole the glue from the store, I missed it.. whoops...

In my last story about Summers on the farm when I was a child, I mentioned about how I love a barn smell ,well Friday evenings at this store was my favorite time to work, folk's would come in from the country and even though these farmers probably had on their good town cloths on, I could still smell that lovely barn aroma coming from them.

Another Monster has been released!!!! down on the farm

My last blog stirred something inside me, this happens every once in awhile and every time I fall back like a drunk off his booze I get drawn in again to telling stories from my life .So here goes a little story about a tiny fishing Village on the Eastern Shore of Nova Scotia, Marie Joseph. A hop, skip and jump on the road to Cape Breton. Where as a child I spent one to three weeks every summer . My Mom's family had a working farm with a connecting general store where they sold their own milk ,butter, meat ,vegetables as well I remember barrels of molasses they would dip into for folk's ,they had fun nick knacks from China ,fishing gear for the neighboring fishermen ,who would trade at times fish/lobster for meat and veg. My mother ,God rest her soul, I think about her everyday ,I bet I'm not the only one. Well Mom would love to tell us the story about when she was a young girl in school and all her friend's would be eating Bologna for lunch while she hung her head with shame because she was stuck with Lobster Sandwiches again, we use to laugh and talk about this while she was cleaning her lobster and mine at the same time, even though she had it so much when she was a child she never lost the love of a good boiled Nova Scotia lobster as well I remember her cleaning all the bones out of my salt herring and still not miss a stroke in getting her share in, nothing better then boiled salt Herring and potatoes...oh ,do you not agree?

Back to the farm, my great Uncle Alex was the man of the farm and his wonderful wife Cora was just that my Aunt Cora, she was a very big woman and I can see her sitting right inside the kitchen door everytime we would arrive for our visit, looking out the side window for costumers , the arms on her rocking chair were sprung because of her weight . They had gas pumps as well ,the store was just a walk into another large side room off the upstairs steps. Her footwear always stuck in my mind ,I believe she was so large she could only be comfortable in moccasins and her shoes as with the chair arms bulged on the sides, interesting what we remember from when we were kid's .She always had an apron on and I remember her hair being salt and pepper in color and rather witchy looking now that I think about it all these years later. But no finer Lady would you want to meet, she had the most wonderful Eastern Shore drawl when she spoke which if you asked me to mimic it today I couldn't but I can hear it in my mind as I sit here. Don't you Love it when that happens? I can also smell the bread which was always cooling on the counter . Now that I hopefully have painted a picture of Aunt Cora ,lets talk about Uncle Alex for that is where you would find me ,up bright and early every morning to go to the barn with him , milk the cows, feed the chickens and take the cows out to pasture for the day to be brought back again at night. I can see in my minds eye the cobwebs on the barn windows.Uncle Alex was a fairly slim normal height of a man ,always with five o'clock shadow on his weathered face, his ball cap or actually it was more of a train conductors looking cap, see in above B/W photo , I remember it looking like it had seen many days of hard work and even when he was dressed in his Sunday best go to meeting cloths for a funeral or wedding,he still had that Heavenly smell of barn and livestock wafting from him. Over the years I have had some wonderful thoughts and moments regarding the smell of a barn, am I strange to love that smell so ? maybe, but I think not. When he and I would get back from taking the cows out to pasture I would then help Aunt Cora separate the milk, she would bake with fresh milk daily. I see the big cream separator in the side room off the porch and right outside the kitchen. I can smell the fresh milk , oh how nice that was. She used dish cloths for filtering the milk and then our next chore was to make butter...yes homemade butter. No wonder Chuck and I choose to try our hand at small scale hobby farming when we married and moved to the country...thank you Uncle Alex and Aunt Cora for that . I played on old hay wagons throughout the day, I was found once in the barn sound asleep laying with one of my many pet calves from over the years ,I always no matter what color they were, called them "Brownie". Making hay was fun ,I never had to work hard and I hope I wasn't in Uncle's Alex's way or under foot , I never did get that impression, actually we were pretty darn close ,we would lay on the old head ache couch at the end of the day in the kitchen with smells of Aunt Cora's delicious meals sending aromas throughout the house landing in our sleepy worn out from a hard days work nostrils and then before bed we would sit in the fancy parlor and watch TV with the old rabbit ears on top , maybe one channel. I remember Aunt Cora had a blanket on the fancy couch because of Alex's work cloths and she had a piece of clear plastic pinned across the back wall of the couch because his greasy hair might have stained her wall paper.

One thing that always amused me and I thought about it years later was the fact they sold toilet paper in their store but choose to have catalogs to use instead of TP in the outhouse. Mom ,Dad and I would sleep upstairs in the front guest room and we at night would use the most beautiful blue willow chamber pot and bowl and pitcher set for morning grooming. We had real toilet paper in our room but not outside. Mom was a bad one for Pepsi and every night on our way upstairs to bed she would pop into the store and get a bottle ,remember the inside door to the store was at the the right of the stairs , that was a kid's dream to have a store right in your house. I would work in the store at times with Aunt Cora, you know I get the feeling Aunt Cora and Uncle Alex must have been stuck baby sitting me a lot because I was always with one or the other of them, while Mom and Dad would visit old friend's and really only remember Mom at bed time . I was kept very busy down on the farm . I would Love to work in the store, not doing much of anything but enjoying feeling very special ,being behind the counter , it seems every Summer I would get one of those special nick knacks I told you about and I would always pick a ceramic horse,I had this horse collection for years.

Sometimes when Mom and Dad were out late I would sleep in the what I want to call the nursery because it was a very tiny room off of Aunt Cora's room, something we today would make into a dressing room. In this tiny room was a sleigh bed with a down filled mattress, comforter and pillow, I would just sink in this bed and sleep like a baby.

One day when I was in the outhouse which was out back down a path past Uncle Alex's woodshed, I got stuck there for awhile, he had a Goose and Gander and I guess the Gander was on her nest and Daddy Goose was in a mood or protecting Momma because everytime I would attempt to leave that outhouse this guy would chase me back in. Finally I heard uncle Alex in the wood shed and cried for help, and was eventually rescued from that little adventure.

Making hay was a fun time for me, my job was easy ,I would ride on top of the hay wagon and stomp it down, my favorite work horse's name was "Billy". One Summer arriving there on the farm just after being at the Bridgewater Big Ex. I had a couple pieces of that cheap jewelry ,remember they would engrave it for you right there at the Ex.? I tied a piece of jewelry to his bridle. This picture above is of me in Uncle Alex's hay wagon with Billy the horse. This image is so small maybe I can figure out how to make it bigger.I think I was about ten in this shot.

My sister ,rather then stay with us on the farm would always continue on to where our Father was from Goldenville where there were two cousin's near her age.Goldenville is just a couple of miles from today (Historic Sherbrook Village) Guysbough County . When I knew it ,it was literally a side road ,you could go straight to our dad's homestead on the way to some old mine shafts or veer to the left which would take you back to the highway. In it's day Goldenville was a bombing place . You can imagine back then during the old Gold mining days . Our Father luckily missed out going to war because as a young teen he worked in the Gold mines driving dynamite trucks which was a very much needed job back then . Most of the able bodied men were over seas and only the young men and women were left for these jobs.

Of course when I was there the older girl's would rather not have me tag along with them ,so I would bake biscuits with Aunt Rene (Irene) her biscuits were some of the best tea biscuits I have ever had in my 57 years . She had a big shallow metal sink with the old time hand pump and I remember washing my hair in it, you had to heat the water on the wood stove and be creative as to how you rinsed trying to get the temperature just right with the mix of heated water from the stove and fresh cold well water from the hand pump. Something else I recall was in every bedroom there was a center ceiling light and there would be a string tied to the light switch and coming down tied to the bed headboard and you would crawl into bed at night after a great day in a super place and reach up and pull the string to turn the light off to then fall into a blissfull sleep.
Mom and Dad lived In Goldenville when they first married ,after a couple years Dad took a job in the Goldmines in Lunenburg County and eventually ended up in Liverpool.

You know Living that type of life is hard ,I have done it ,not only back then when I was visiting these wonderful places as a child but before our son was born, we chose to live like this, we went inshore fishing for a bit and lived in a little place called Feltzen South in Lunenburg County. We had no running water or electricity, no convinces of today's world but I believe everyone should experience this way of life if only for a short time, whenever I flush I'm Thankful.
Our time in Feltzen South is a story in itself, to be told another day.
